The Highlands is by far the largest region in Scotland both in area and in whisky production. This massive area has over 30 distilleries on the mainland. Because the Highlands is so vasts it can have whiskies with cereal sweetness and richness, whiskies that are lighter, fruitier and also whiskies with lots of fruit and pungency. Some whiskies have peat, smoke overtones and some near the coast have maritime flavours.
